I chose an exploration theme because I feel it encompasses the spirit of teaching and learning. As an educator, I am not always going to be there to point students in the right direction, or give them the correct answer. I hope to encourage students to consider themselves explorers, making discoveries and formulating their own conclusions. More important than me teaching the facts, is teaching students how to find their own way with confidence. As an old Chinese proverb says...

Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand.

Telling a student what they are supposed to learn isn't enough. Plain and simple. Learning, like life, needs to be composed of experiences. It is important to inspire students and provide authentic opportunities for them to make discoveries on their own journey to knowledge. They will be more inclined to take ownership for their learning. This way, they will be better equipped for life after the bell rings.

It is necessary for students to realize that learning isn't just important for their report card or to get into a decent college, it is important for their quality of life.  School shouldn't be viewed as something that "has" to be done, but something that students look forward to because they understand how crucial knowledge is to the rest of their lives. It is the foundation for their future. Knowledge is the fuel of the soul, without it... what do we have? I want my students to not only understand, but to appreciate knowledge and its importance in our lives. I want to encourage my students to be life long learners, always questioning and digging deeper.

My theme extends past the idea of the "journey to knowledge" and also reflects the importance of exploring the world around you. I have a strong passion for travel and discovering people, cultures, and places outside of my comfort zone. Having these experiences challenge you to grow as a person. I want to ignite a desire for my students to see the world through their own eyes.

We don't receive wisdom; we must discover it for ourselves after a journey that no one can take for us or spare us.
